Matt Vessell, An Informal Introduction...
As only a true leftie can admit, I have always been a token "creative type". Designer. Photographer. Producer. I don't remember a time in my life when I wasn't developing some sort of creative interest. As a teenager, I was an active member of the yearbook staff and the school photographer. As a student at The University of Georgia, I juggled my core studies with three years of work at the prestigious "The Red & Black" newspaper alongside my duties within the UGA Ad Club. Four years of hard work led to several recognitions. My defining moment came in 1994 when I became the third recipient of the Jennifer L. Stone Memorial Award for Creativity. This annual award is given to one student whom best represents creative excellence in advertising and photography.
Upon graduating in 1994 I entered the Atlanta workforce. I began as a computer graphic artist at Petstuff and quickly learned the ropes of the retail advertising trade. I immersed myself into my work and learned all facets of the business, working directly with our internal customers (merchants, buyers, etc..) as well as industry publishers, printers and photographers. It was an exciting process. During my professional journey I have made several pit stops. I worked with various start-up companies (dekor, SleepTec, Inc.), a well known "big box" home improvement retailer (The Home Depot EXPO), then a 6-year stint with a successful homebuilder (Venture Homes, Inc.). In 2003 I was awarded the SMC 2003 Professionalism Award for Best Builder Website by the Greater Atlanta Home Builders Association. Not a bad accomplishment for my first corporate website.
Throughout the years I have been very fortunate to have had the opportunity to branch out and offer my talents to a diverse range of clients and projects. Maintaining the variety in my work invigorates me creatively. Change is a natural progression within our industry. Companies come, and companies go. As technology and communication advances, the mediums in which we work evolve as well. Through it all I have found my one constant that still remains true...the passion for my work is still as exciting today as it was when I began over 18 years ago.
